Fifteen years ago I set up my first business. I found
the process challenging, exciting, scary and lonely.
So I setup Enterprise
Island, the world's first enterprise resort!
Twenty years ago I cashed in my pension (it wasn't much)
and started my first business.
I went from university student to teacher to entrepreneur.
I found the process challenging, scary and exciting.
The biggest obstacle was overcoming obstacles set by
other people. Friends said "Oh you are brave."
"You'll need to do a business plan" or simply
held their breath and looked at me. Nevertheless I ploughed
ahead and five years later was supplying Harrods and
select supermarkets with high quality cakes and meals,
employed over twenty people, raised venture finance,
moved factory - and was miserable.
Why? Well I was now an entrepreneur
and always looking at business ideas, and I knew I was
in the wrong business. So I ended up at back at University,
working to help other would be entrepreneurs.
Naturally I left to start another company, which for
the last fifteen years has been researching, designing
and delivering enterprise-learning programmes.
I found the combination of building a manufacturing
business from scratch and working with other entrepreneurs
invaluable and probably unique. Then the old teacher
in me came out and I started looking at how people learn
to be enterprising. To be precise I started developing
new ways to develop entrepreneurs and enterprising schools,
businesses and organisations.
And so Enterprise
Island was born.
We now offer the most unusual, exciting and inspiring
courses, books and materials to help you unlock your
enterprise potential. We now have a fabulous base in
Cornwall but still travel the length and breadth of
the UK spreading the enterprise message.
I look forward to seeing you at one of our events and
courses.
P.S. Remember, you're an entrepreneur - you just don't
know it yet!
